Top 5 Indie Games of 2018 (So Far)

2018 has been an interesting year for games and gamers alike. Hundreds of games were released with many gems amongst the crowd. There have also been major flops this year from big developers. This includes EA’s Battlegrounds II, Radical Heights and Metal Gear: Survive to name a few. The upcoming Battlefield V is also expected to disappoint in sales, seeing that there are many complaints from gamers regarding historical accuracy.

It has been an extraordinary year for indie and mid-sized developers, with many amazing titles released over different platforms. Here we will go over some of the best indie releases (so far) of 2018.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

Possibly one of my favorite releases this year, Bloodstained is a spiritual successor to Castlevania 3 for the NES. It was developed by the same developer, Koji Igarashi and has the same creepy vibes. Like its inspiration, you can choose to add companions to your adventure to change up the game play. It is one of the best action platformers I've ever had the pleasure of playing. If this game was released for the NES, it would be remembered as its greatest game.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

A sequel to 2015’s majorly successful crowdfunded project, Pillars of Eternity, Pillars of Eternity II does not disappoint. The sequel improves on the feeling of adventure, with more exploration, better visuals and improved combat. It is no secret that your author loves a good RPG, and Pillars of Eternity: 2: Deadfire is one of the best released in years.

Celeste

A delightful retro style game with amazing pixel art, Celeste will remind old-school gamers of their 16/8 bit glory days. Its difficult platforming and side-to-side jumping will make many think of a friendlier and more colorful version of Ninja Gaiden on the NES. Celeste was developed by the same team as 2013’s TowerFall, so it is very worth giving it a peek.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine

A visually stunning experience, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is quite a unique game. It allows you to explore and travel America like never before. With spectacular writing and a mind-blowing visual style, it is easy to see why this game is so popular.

Super Meat Boy Forever

One of the world’s most famous indie games, Super Meat Boy finally got a sequel. Super Meat Boy Forever maintains the original’s simple yet punishing style of play. It makes only a few minor improvements to its predecessor, therefor guaranteeing that the fans will be pleased.
