Over the years we’ve seen many amazing game series that were released. These games inspired us & captivated our attention. Unfortunately for these games it has been years since they have seen another release and their future is in question. Below are our top 5 discontinued gaming franchises in no particular order:
Initially a launch title for the SNES in 1991, F-Zero is considered one of the best racing games released on the platform. The game took advantage of Nintendo’s Mode 7 to give the impression of a 3D rotating background which made it truly unique in the early 90’s. F-Zero was followed by F-Zero X for the N64 in 1998, F-Zero GX on the GameCube in 2003, and a few Gameboy Advance releases. Sadly, we haven’t seen F-Zero on a home console since. While it is unlikely, we hope this series gets a Nintendo Switch release.
Developed in 1994 by Bungie (yes that Bungie), Marathon brought FPS’s to Apple computers. Marathon was a big upgrade to the many shooters of the era by providing an amazing futuristic space setting and having a lot of story & background. It was also one of the first games of its era to offer multiplayer gameplay. Without Marathon it is unlikely that we would ever get to see its spiritual successor Halo.
Initially released in 1997 for MS-DOS, Dungeon Keeper was a unique strategy game where a player has to construct and manage a dungeon and keep adventurous “heroes” out. It was followed by Dungeon Master 2 in 1999 and it still has a cult following to this day. Unfortunately, Bullfrog Productions, which produced the game was purchased by EA games and closed shortly afterwards.
Developed by BioWare in 2003, Knights of the Old Republic is considered one of the best Star Wars games ever released and possibly one of the best RPG’s of all times. It is a story heavy RPG in which the player takes the role of a mighty Sith lord who has amnesia and becomes a Jedi Knight. It was followed by a sequel the following year. There was a spin-off MMORPG released in 2011, Star Wars: The Old Republic but it failed to capture the charm of the original.
Unfortunately, the first 2 installments were never released in the west. Advance Wars debuted in North America and Europe in 2001. It is probably the best turned-based strategy ever released on a handheld console. It was a massive success and 2 more sequels quickly followed. Advance Wars 2 was released in 2003 & Advance Wars: Dual Strike in 2005. The series got its final release in 2008’s Advance Wars: Days of Ruin which had a very different tone than its predecessors.
