Top 5 Classic Arcade Games

These games are the early forms of what we know as gaming today. It’s important to know our gamer roots, so let’s dive into the 5 most classic arcade games.

Pac-Man

Possibly the simplest design for a video game character of all time. It looks like the game designers were eating pizza with one slice taken it out of it, then they just made it yellow and programmed it into what we now know as Pac-Man.

Regardless, the 1/8th eaten yellow pizza is central to one of the most classic games of all time. Pac-Man was in every laundromat, bodega and arcade you can imagine. If you wanted to play Pac-Man, you could walk 5 minutes in any direction and find a machine.

Space Invaders

It’s the classic story, aliens are trying to invade earth so you get in your green tank and start defending the world. Space Invaders is one of the most popular games of all time, but with good reason. After a few stages, it gets very difficult. That’s what it’s notorious for, it’s easy to learn, but hard to master.

Donkey Kong

I wrote an article about eSports where I highlight the Steve Wiebe vs. Bill Mitchell Donkey Kong showdown. I recommend you check it out here if you haven’t yet. Their rivalry for the arcade game highlights just how significant King Kong’s impact was. Yet another arcade staple turned classic.

Frogger

“Go play in traffic”. Yeah, I will, and I’m going to have a good time doing it. Not in real life of course! But, instead, with my buddy frogger. That satisfaction you get when you leap into a row where you can just hang out for a bit is the best. Because almost every row is out to get you, so you better get leapin’.

Asteroids

You better start shooting and breaking down those asteroids or else you’ll end up in an asteroid dodging situation much like Star Wars. What’s awesome about Asteroids is that your fighter jet is responsible for shooting in all directions. Traditionally, these types of games present a one direction line of fire, but Asteroids incorporates 360 degrees of it.
